Who does Yale Internal Medicine accept for Medicine Electives at Yale?
Only residents from one of the seven Yale Affiliated Hospitals will be accepted for rotation in Yale Medicine Electives. The seven approved Yale Affiliated Hospitals include Bridgeport Hospital, Danbury Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, Griffin Hospital, Hospital of Saint Raphael and Saint Mary's Hospital. If you are not a resident from one of the seven approved hospitals listed above, we can not schedule an elective for you with the Yale Department of Internal Medicine. Sections of Yale Internal Medicine have been notified to refer all requests for Medicine elective to Barbara Wanciak in the Department of Internal Medicine. We do not schedule interns (categorical or preliminary) for electives.
How do I submit the required registration/application documents for the upcoming Academic Year?
Complete all the registration/application documents located on the website and place in the order shown in the Medicine Elective Registration Instructions. Submit your completed applications to your Affiliate Hospital Department Coordinator for mailing with the rest of the resident applications from your department for submission no later than June 8, 2007.
What if I'm requesting an elective AFTER the academic year begins?
If you would like to submit an application individual of your hospital's group submission in May, we suggest that you call Barbara Wanciak prior to filling out all the paperwork to inquire about elective availability at 203-785-6963. Once availability is established, mail all documents to Barbara Wanciak at the address indicated on Yale Affiliated Hospital Website under the elective link “Medicine Elective Registration Forms and Instructions” at the bottom of page.
How do I find out which Medicine Electives are available for scheduling?
After the initial rotation schedules are determined each June, the Yale Department of Medicine, will post “Elective Availability Reports” every two weeks to the Yale Affiliated Hospital Program Web Site starting in mid-July. There will be 1 report for each block period. Simply choose the block period you are interested in to see which Medicine Electives are “full” or “open” during that block period. Note: Elective changes take place frequently, so the posted reports may only be used as a reference and do not guarantee current elective availability. When are the elective registration documents due in order to be scheduled for the upcoming academic year (AY)?
Initial Academic Year (AY) materials are due this year no later than June 8, 2007 in order for residents to be scheduled electives for the new AY 2007-2008 which begins at Yale June 25th, 2007.
How many Medicine electives can I request to be scheduled for at Yale during one academic year?
We allow a maximum of two (2), four-week electives for each Affiliate Resident during one academic year. Please indicate on your Medicine Elective Registration Form if you are requesting to be scheduled for one (1) or two (2) electives. You may sign up for two-week long Medicine Elective Rotation in 2007.
Do I have to submit a VA Application if I only want to be schedule for an elective at YNHH?
No. Submit BOTH a YNHH and a VA application ONLY if you are applying for the YNHH Endocrinology Elective, the YNHH Rheumatology Elective OR if you are only applying for a VA Elective(s). Residents who are scheduled for YNHH Endocrinology or Rheumatology Electives will work at YNHH and the VA during their rotations and therefore must submit both YNHH and VA applications.
When will I receive my elective assignment(s)?
Affiliate resident electives schedules will be determined and emailed to the Affiliate Hospital Coordinators for distribution on the week of June 18, 2007. Affiliate Residents will be emailed their assigned electives for 2006-2007 the week of June 18, 2007 at their email as indicated on their registration form. Affiliate residents' elective start and end dates, for their electives scheduled at Yale and the VA, will coincide with their hospital rotation dates and will be indicated on each schedule. If you submitted an application individual of your hospital's group submission in May or June, we suggest that you call Barbara Wanciak prior to filling out all the paperwork to inquire about elective availability at 203-785-6963.
Who do I contact if I am SICK or LATE for my elective?
Call the elective contact person immediately if you are going to be delayed or miss a day due to sickness or emergency. Each resident's elective contact information is located on their elective schedule and also located on the elective description. You are asked to be responsible and show up for your elective on the planned start date as indicated on your schedule and at the time requested by the elective contact.
How do I CANCEL AN ELECTIVE?

Is PARKING available for Affiliated Hospital Residents while rotating at Yale?
Parking in 2007 and 2008 will need to be arranged through the Medical School Parking Office, SHM C E 1 located in the basement of the Sterling Hall of Medicine on Cedar Street. Phone 203-785-6456, email ysm.parking@yale.edu.

Where is my elective and what time do I arrive the FIRST DAY?
Please refer to the Elective Description. Please review the elective description arrival time and where to go. Many electives ask that residents contact them prior to the start date of the elective. All Medicine Elective Locations are described in detail and are located by clicking on the link,
“Medicine Elective List and Yale Block Dates,” and then clicking on the PDF icon located next to the name of the elective on the Yale Affiliated Hospital Web Site.
Where is the YNHH Housestaff Office?
The YNHH House Staff Office is located on the 2nd floor of the wing “Tompkins” just past the Second Floor Cafeteria on the right, halfway down the hall on the right. You can get directions to the YNHH Housestaff Office by going to the Yale-New Haven Hospital Main Entrance, 20 York Street and asking for directions to the House staff Office, New Haven Unit, Tompkins 209 from the Information Desk. You can also go to www.ynhh.org, “Parking and Directions” and click on “Overview Map Showing Facilities” to find “Tompkins.” The YNHH Housestaff Telephone number is 688-2259. The Housestaff Office is normally open from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (M-F).
How do I obtain a YNHH TEMPORARY ID?
Please check in at the YNHH Housestaff Office to pick up your I.D. Request Form. See “Where is the YNHH Housestaff Office?” above. After you pick up your I.D. Request Form from the Housestaff Office and check in to verify that they have all your elective application forms, and the staff have activated you in their database, you will be directed to the YNHH ID Center in Room 11A for your temporary ID. The ID Office Hours are M-F 8:00 a.m. to 12:30pm, closed 12:30-1:00pm, reopens from 1:00pm to 2:30pm. The ID Office Telephone Number is 688-6094.
Am I required to take YNHH CCSS COMPUTER TRAINING for my elective?
Yes, you are required to complete computer training with YNHH CCSS PRIOR to your elective at YNHH. You don't need YNHH CCSS Training if you're elective is purely a VA elective rotation. Upon completion of YNHH CCSS Training you will receive an SCM Code that will allow you to access patient information. You must obtain your own SCM Code and must NOT use codes assigned to other physicians. It is against HIPAA Regulations for anyone to share their patient access codes. Please call Fran Mead at 688-3017 to schedule a class either before you begin rotation or some time the first week of your rotation. You may also email Fran Mead at meadsa@ynhh.org.
Please understand that you need to check-in at the YNHH Housestaff Office FIRST. Computer training can not take place until the House Staff Office activates you in their “system.” The training is 3 hours in length. Most elective sections will permit you to get this done the first morning of the first day of your elective, but your elective section needs to know of your arrangements. The telephone # to your elective contact is located on the schedule that was emailed to you and also located on the elective description located on the Yale Affiliated Hospital Web Site. Do I receive a temporary pager?
Some sections through which you are rotating issue pagers. Please ask the medicine elective faculty or staff upon arrival.
Will I receive a Toll Authorization Code for long-distance calls?
Toll authorization numbers (TAN) are NOT issued to visiting residents.
